Work Placement with Realm Pictures Making Music Video for the Quails

20/04/2010

The weekend gone has been a real eye opener and a fantastic experience working with the film company Realm Pictures. I only had a few days notice, but I was able to pull some favors at the last minute and booked off work! Realm Picture are a small film company based near Exeter, they’ve recently premiered their short feature length film “Zomblies” at the Odeon cinema Exeter, and yet still have premiers to go ahead within Soho London.

The aim of the film shoot was to create a music video for the Quails, who’ve supported Muse and the Kooks recently and are about to hit big fairly soon, by checking out their Myspace and Facebook.

The narrative of the music video puts forward a quirky youthful vibe as the band are chased through the streets of Plymouth by box monsters who eventually chase them into a club in Exeter, turning all the band’s fans into box monsters and eventually are fort off by the band until the music video ends.

My role within the shoot was to act as an extra (box monster) as well as performing a few small stunts, including me leaping into a body of water head first while chasing the band. I also helped out the prop technician assemble and repair boxes when needed.

The shoot took 2 days to film, and took a huge amount of energy from everyone on the Realm team including the band (as well as there supporters, although they were only there for one day!). The Realm guys were great to work with, and the days were long but went by smoothly, giving me a great taster for the film industry. If I was ever asked back again I’d be more than happy to help.

Paul Gravett 21/04/10

15/04/2010

With the up coming week, Paul Gravett is coming to lecture on Wednesday 21st April at Sion Hill. To spread the word to students that this is a lecture not to miss I’ve put to together a poster, which I’ve hopefully define Gravett as ‘him’. I’ve been searching for images which he’s been associated with over the past, either in books graphic novellas or other. There was one image in particular involving a poker game from one of his graphic novels (I hope! If not I liked the scene anyway!) I drew the image from scratch and put a bit of my own style into the drawing, instead of using the head from the scene I drew Gravett’s head instead, but I wanted to make it quite static, well postured like what he seems to be like in real life. Around him I drew and positioned characters from his books, as if they were being projected or swarming around him. The text was from his website, but hand drawn quickly.

I can’t wait for this lecture as I’ve always dreamed of eventually publishing my own graphic novel! One day!

Global Anatomical Campaign

13/12/2009

Right I’ve been thinking, my latest ideas have been about the anatomical movement of animals (especially bats!), there are so many strange and wonderful creatures out there, and the movement and physical definition of some are so alien and unfamiliar to the human eye, that I thought this could be an interesting idea to explore or capture through a moving time scale, method of capturing image or outcome-unknown so far.

While I’ve been writing over the last month, I’ve come across a bronze sculptor who has begun a global campaign through his sculptures to raise the awareness of global impacts the global society has on the world. Mark Coreth who is well known for working in bronze has adapted to working from a 9 tonne block of ice, to sculpt polar bears across the world. Concealed within the block of ice, he has made a full life seize bronze skeleton of an adult bear, over the period of a week to 10 days the ice will melt leaving behind this bone structure, delivering a cold and harsh impact of the effects of the reality we’re having on the earth. The first bear has already been created and left for the public to interact with in Copenhagen, I’ve been watching the video feed on videojuicer.com although it may have been taken down now due to the melting being complete. The second has been carved in London only a few days ago, is still being steamed from videojuicer, the public have been encouraged to interact with the sculpture by touch increasing the melting process, creating a bigger impact showing we globally have the power and control to take action and become more aware of our day to day actions. Coreth will continue on his tour around the world making these sculptures and spreading his message of awareness.

Woo jez, when abit off track there, I feel Coreth has a point, and is doing a huge favor to the world through his work. As inspiration I want to investigate into animals that may be in danger of becoming extinct and identify a correct medium to display this awareness/campaign. One solution to get people’s awareness would be through what we see on a day to day base, and a have a huge desire to get printing T-shirts again… enough said!
